Calculator guide
The calculator converts your APR into a monthly rate and simulates payoff month by month. Each month it adds interest to the balance, subtracts your payment, and repeats until the balance reaches zero. It counts the months, totals interest and payments, and projects your payoff date. If your payment cannot cover the monthly interest, the balance would grow, and the calculator warns you.
Balance is what you owe today. APR is the card's annual interest rate, often 20% or higher, which makes card debt one of the most expensive kinds of borrowing. Monthly payment is the fixed amount you plan to pay; paying only the minimum can stretch payoff over many years. Comparing payment amounts shows exactly how much time and interest you save, which helps you decide between paying the card aggressively, using a balance transfer, or consolidating with a lower-rate personal loan.

Payoff takes about 50 months with roughly $2,450 in interest.
Payoff drops to about 20 months and interest to about $1,000.
$300 a month clears $5,000 in about 17 months with minimal interest, excluding fees.
Paying only the minimum extends the payoff timeline significantly and increases total interest paid, sometimes taking decades on larger balances. Increasing the payment amount shortens that timeline considerably.
High interest rates, often 18-25% APR, compound against the balance faster than many other debt types. This makes credit card debt grow quickly when only minimum payments get made.
A balance transfer to a lower-rate or 0% introductory card can accelerate payoff by redirecting more payment toward principal. Transfer fees and the promotional period length affect how much it actually helps.
Paying even $25-50 above the minimum each month can cut years off the payoff timeline on typical balances. The calculator shows the specific impact based on the actual balance and rate entered.
